Where are you located:
Company name and nature of business:
Dough It Yourself is a small artisan company producing baking mixes, all hand made with absolutely no artificial additives.
The mixes include biscuits, brownies, biscotti & shortbread, and some new flavours will be coming soon. They are so easy and great fun to make with kids and are ideal for very busy working people who haven’t always got time to bake from scratch!
When did you start your business?
I did my very first farmer’s market in December 09. I spent many months developing recipes whilst still working full time, doing the occasional farmers’ market at weekends.
What type of jobs did you have before you started your business?
After completing my degree in French & German, I worked in various marketing management roles, before taking time out to have my three children. I then trained as a teaching assistant while they were still little and now teach primary French one day per week.
How does your business fit around your family life?
I love working for myself. I have total freedom to choose my own hours. I can still meet friends for coffee, go on school trips and go to the supermarket without three kids in tow! I try and get all my work done during the school hours and after the children are in bed, but it isn’t always possible and I occasionally have to work at weekends.
What has been the most challenging part about running your business?
The biggest challenge is not having a budget big enough to do everything I would have liked! I have had to start small but I have persevered and it has paid off.
How has your business grown since it started?
I started selling my baking mixes at markets and then in several deli’s and farm shops in Cheshire but since winning a Gold Star in this year’s Great Taste Awards, I have expanded to delis all over the country and now have an on-line shop.
What advice would you give to someone else wanting to start their own business?
If you believe in your product then go for it! There are so many people offering excellent free advice and there are grants and bursaries on offer.
