Paula Giles – The Party Plan Guru
Paula AKA The Party Plan Guru
Company name and nature of business:
The Party Plan Guru Expert in all things party plan, supporting and helping the party planners of the here and now, as well as providing business tips and advice to allow Party Planners to increase their business.
When did you start your business?
What type of jobs did you have before you started your business?
Hotel Manager, Consultant for Vie at Home, Avon, Ann Summers and Cold Calling Selling.
How does your business fit around your family life?
I am able to work at night and when my son has naps. I had my son last year and he is now 1 and it allows me to not have to go back to a full time role and have to worry about childcare. I also find that I am able to go to Networking events even sometimes with him which is something that I would not be able to do if I was working a full time job with a company.
What has been the most challenging part about running your business?
Time Management and also I did not expect it to take off as fast as it has done; we have not only had people over the UK finding us but also over the world with our most recent follower in South Texas. I find that I have to make so many lists and have a print out of a diary for a full month so that I can keep track of everything that I am doing. I not only run The Party Plan Guru but I also have a party plan business of my own so it is always go in my house.
How has your business grown since it started?
Like I said I did not imagine that it would take off so fast, since the beginning of April we have had over 4,000 hits on the website, have 50 subscribers and also 120 people following us on Facebook. It is only the beginning of June 2011 and I am so pleased that I am able to help so many people with their businesses.
What advice would you give to someone else wanting to start their own business?
I would say DO IT, my mantra is The biggest risk in life, is the one you don’t take. I started The Party Plan Guru with nothing at all as a back up, I went to a local seminar about blogging and now find that is completely been the right thing. My party plan business is with a brand new company which no one really knows about at the moment and I already have a team of 6 and that is in 4 months. I would always say that you should do your research too, make sure that the business you are thinking about going into is the best for YOU and your family and you are going to be able to find other people to purchase your products, not just your family and friends. Also don’t rely on your friends to help you in business, the chances are that they won’t be that helpful and supportive so do it for yourself and be proud that you did it yourself.
Do you have any tips for success?
On my website there are different pieces of advice about having a successful business in party plan, but one of the biggest tips I can share is that you have to remember this is YOUR business if you are confident about it you should show that. If you are negative about your business or have had a lot of NO’s about party bookings etc., don’t worry keep going. The more you put into your business the more you will get out and it does not even have to cost you a lot to do that. I have given away FREE sessions on our website to help people with their business but we also have various sessions that we can cover that is specific to you. Every business and business owner is different and The Party Plan Guru is here to help you in any way possible.
