Working as a Marketing Manager
We caught up with Cat who is a Marketing Manager for Matched Betters. Cat tells us what it’s like to do her job.
What appealed to you about your career choice?
Marketing has always interested me as it seemed like both a fun career choice and quite specialised. In this industry you have the ability to get into the minds of consumers & understand their needs, wants, habits and behaviours – this has always appealed to me. Plus there is a huge creative side to the role – trying to come up with new exciting ways to sell and promote products. You really get the best of both worlds – using your analytical strategic side & then your creative side – it’s perfect!
How did you get into it (qualifications needed, experience etc.)?
I went to University and did a degree in Marketing and in Economics – I think the combination of these two have given me strengths in creativity, thinking out side the box and analytics – the key to successful marketing.
What does a typical day involve?
The beauty of Marketing, especially in a start up is that it is so varied. One minute I could be called up journalists to run a news article and the next I could be designing artwork for print. It’s extremely varied but includes social media, email marketing, networking, PR, customer service – it really is a well rounded role.
Is there any scope for family-friendly working? (flexi-time or work at home days)
There is definitely scope to have flexible working hours, however it depends on who you’re working for. In the past I’ve worked for corporates who haven’t been as mindful but my current role is great!
Are there any specific benefits or perks?
I think people in this industry tend to be outgoing, fun and really creative so to me one of the main benefits are the people. I’ve always had roles where the people are a amazing. Perks? In marketing it’s quite sales driven so there are big perks when you hit your targets, bonuses are the best. It gives your job a bit more purpose which is brilliant!
What aspects do you enjoy most about your job?
Definitely the creative side – you really can push the boundaries and think outside the box. The other aspect is seeing an idea through from start to finish – right from the creation of the concept through to it being a live campaign – it’s really satisfying.
Are there any parts of your job that you don’t enjoy and how do you deal with these?
My biggest bug bear is having to deal with people that aren’t open to trying new things. Sometimes you come across people who want to stick with traditional channels and ways of doing things, but I love to push the limits and try new things.
Are you able to progress further? What other career options are open to you having done this kind of job?
There are always options to go higher! As marketing contains so many different skill sets, you can go into Chief Marketing roles, Business Development roles, CEO roles and more! It really depends what floats your boat. As for me – I’m still not sure where I want to go!
What advice would you give someone wanting to get into this line of work/career?
The best advice I can give to someone wanting to get into marketing is to get experience while you can! When I first came out of Uni it was really tough to get a marketing role as I hadn’t had any hands on experience. Perhaps you could offer to do some voluntary work for a charity and look after their social media & email marketing. Start small and build your skill set up! It’s so rewarding so if you put the hard work in, you will be rewarded.
